The Tropic Angler NS (‘no secrets’) rigging system is specifically designed to give our TA Offshore Trolling Range of lures their optimal swimming action. Its design is based on simplicity, superior fish hooking capability and safety (to fishermen and fish alike). Better swimming action translates into a more realistic presentation, which means more bites and more fish. Simple.
How the system works
For a start, you only need 4 items to rig one of our lures – crimps, crimping tool, leader and hook. The system is exactly the same for rigging both our small and large lures, just the sizing of the rigging items change.
Small Lures
For our small lures, we recommend 80lb Jinkai, although many anglers chose to fish them on 100lb or 120lb. Basically it comes down to the size fish you have in your area. Remember, the lighter the leader the better the swimming action. Keep the leader length down to around 5 feet for optimal swimming action and ease of handling, and then simply attach the loop end of the leader to a snap swivel on your main line. For a hook, it’s hard to go past a single stainless Mustard O’Shaughnessy 8/0 (#34007). Fine in gauge, they hold a great point and are strong – all the characteristics you are looking for in a great trolling hook. Just don’t forget to crimp down the barb for enhanced hook penetration properties.
Large Lures
400lb or 600lb Jinkai is recommended. Hooks again are a single stainless Mustard, this time a 7691S 12/0.
The following diagrams show the set-up.

PIC 1 - All the rigging items you need.

PIC 2 - Rigging: Leader is run through resin head, 2 crimps then threaded on leader, hook threaded on, then leader run through crimp closest to hook to form a loop for the hook, leader then wound back on itself for a section of ‘double leader’, then threaded through 2nd crimp. Both crimps crimped. The ‘double leader’ section not only gives you extra abrasion resistance but acts as a spacer for the hook in the skirt. Rubber washer optional.

PIC 3 – Rigged and ready to fish. Note where the hook and hook point sits in relation to the end of the skirt.
